Wings/Lighting: Nav-strobes wired and mounted.

Here are the posts pertaining to nav-strobe lights.
The nav/strobe power Molex socket connector is snapped into a fenestration on the outboard spar.  Turns out the fenestra on my spar are too big so the connector just slides on through.  I've now seen six -14 spars and they are all the same.  Since I had become so familiar with tank sealant, why not seal these bad boys in place?  I actually completed this step on 16-Sep-13.

Here is the back side of the nav light on the left wing tip.  The crimping and soldering (I always solder every crimp) was done on 16-Dec-13.

And the right wing tip with its nav light snugly fit.  The actual drilling and mounting of the bracket was completed on 4-Nov-13.

Wings/Lighting: Wing tips. Nav/strobe mounting holes cut.

Here are the posts pertaining to nav-strobe lights.
I'm jumping around the plans due to logistical/replacements/tool delays in other sections.  Today was my first experience with Fiberglass.  Turns out it's like butter to the drill bits.

I made the holes for the nav/strobe light mounts using the paper template.  As always, I check to make sure templates are printed to scale.  If not, I'll rescale.  Turns out, these were printed properly.

First I taped the template to the left tip.  I placed the bracket on to make sure its length axis lined up with the chord of the wing tip.  Some minor adjustments were necessary to get a nice alignment.

Then just drill out the holes and clean them up.  A simple file was needed to finish the wire chase holes.  Left image is the outside face whilst right is the inside face.

Left bracket installed.

The right side is, as nearly always the case, a repeat of the left.

However the right bracket in my kit is defective.  One of the legs is cut at an angle so the holes don't align to the drilling template.  If you look closely below, you can see that the top leg is angled inwards towards the bottom leg.  That's no good.  Will need to get that replaced.  It's also evident in the left picture above, perhaps moreso with the template holes.

Wings/Lighting: Nav/strobe ordered.

Here are the posts pertaining to nav-strobe lights.
Picked up AeroLEDs NS90 navigation/strobe lights from Van's as the work on the wingtips is within sight.

The kit (OP-55) from Van's includes a noise filter and other helpful parts (see below), so if you find the lights cheaper elsewhere, keep in mind you'll be sans those.  Turns out the filter is just a 6800 μF 25 V electrolytic capacitor, though Van's put some leads on it.  It must be to reduce coupling of high frequency noise into the comm system.  Excellent thinking.
